Make the most of your leaf strewn lawn by incorporating Fall foliage into this fun activity with your kids! It’s simple and uses supplies that you probably already have at home, plus it creates instant seasonal artwork for your home! This is a great opportunity to teach your child about the different types of trees in your neighborhood!

Supplies Needed:
Leaves of different shapes and sizes
Crayons
Construction paper

Instructions

  1. Go outside and collect leaves with your child. Be sure to select a variety of shapes and sizes from different trees to make the most of this activity.
  2. Remove the wrappers from your crayons.
  3. On a sheet of construction paper, lay out leaves vein side up. You can do one leaf at a time or create a pattern of leaves- whichever you and your child prefer.
  4. Place another sheet of paper over your leaves.
  5. Take a crayon on its side and rub it across the paper. You should notice the pattern of veins of the leaves appearing on your paper as you run the crayon back and forth.
  6. Experiment with different patterns and sizes of leaves and colors of crayons to make different types of artwork.
  7. Learning Tip: To amp up the learning on this activity, consider doing one single leaf from each species of tree in your neighborhood and then teaching your child which tree it came from. You can write the name of the tree on the construction paper next to the leaf rubbing and then you’ll have a handy field guide for detecting leaf types!
