The New Year brings many things, one of which is New Year’s Resolutions. Often times, we set lofty goals for our future selves and by February or March, we’ve abandoned our resolutions for one reason or another. There isn’t a science to New Years Resolutions, but we’ve got a few tips that may help you with yours! Check them out below.

  1. Be Specific: The more specific you are in setting attainable goals the better. Even if this means paring down some of your resolutions (see suggestion #2), it’s a step in the right direction. Think of it this way- it’s a lot easier to measure “Work out three times per week” than it is to “Be more fit.”
  2. Be Realistic: This is a huge one! Your resolutions need to be realistic, achievable goals or you’ll give up when you don’t see any progress towards them. This may involve setting a series of short term goals on the road to one big, grand, multi-month overall goal. You know yourself and your habits, and even though the New Year is a chance to improve yourself, it’s not a total blank slate. The key to lasting resolutions is a balance of recognizing what you want and acknowledging what you are capable of (which may surprise you! Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself!)
  3. Write Them Down: This may seem silly or unnecessary, but putting your goals in writing can help you visualize achieving them. If you keep a journal, write them down there, or consider writing them on a piece of paper and posting them somewhere you’ll see them when you get ready each day. Turn your resolutions into a mantra by repeating them each day and strengthen your commitment to them in the process.
